ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

Brandon Powell, Deerfield Beach, football: Powell rushed for three touchdowns, highlighted by an 80-yard score, and 192 yards to lead the Bucks (4-0) over Coral Springs 26-6.

Alexa Cruz and Manuel Velasquez, St. Thomas Aquinas, cross-country: Cruz finished a Broward girls’ best third in 18:06 at the flrunners.com Girls Race of Champions, and the surging Velasquez finished a Broward boys’ best 12th in the Boys’ Race of Champions to help the Raiders’ boys’ team finish third overall.

Amanda Medlock, Western, girls’ volleyball: Medlock had 12 kills, eight aces and 17 digs to lead the Wildcats (8-1) over Flanagan.

John Battle, Hallandale, football: The recent LSU commit took an interception 90 yards for a touchdown to build a commanding 25-7 halftime lead as the Chargers (5-0) rolled over Coconut Creek 46-13.

Caitlin McCluskey, Sheridan Hills, girls’ volleyball: McCluskey had 14 kills and four assists to lead the Sharks over rival Hollywood Christian.

Clara Smiddy, South Florida HEAT, girls’ swimming: Smiddy won the 200 IM, 100 free and 100 backstroke and led the winning 200-yard freestyle relay and 400-freestyle relay teams to help the HEAT win the University Swimming and Diving Invitational girls’ title.

Julia Matzat, St. Thomas Aquinas, girls’ golf: Matzat (37) won medalist honors to help the Raiders beat Coral Glades.

Julia Montgomery, Pine Crest, girls’ cross-country: The reigning Class 2A state champion placed fifth in 18:24 at the flrunners.com Girls Race of Champions.

Katie Hull, Northeast, girls’ volleyball: Hull had 12 points, three aces and six assists to lead the Hurricanes over Boyd Anderson.

Dylan Rupert, Cypress Bay, football: Rupert threw a touchdown and ran for 145 yards and another touchdown as the Lightning (2-2) beat District 12-8A rival Everglades.

Joel Lacy and Pasha Guilbert, Calvary Christian, boys’ cross-country: Lacy (16:35) and Guilbert went 1-4 to help the Eagles finish third in the flrunners.com boys’ small school race.

Lauren Carver, Archbishop McCarthy, girls’ golf: Carver shot a team-low 40 to help the Mavericks beat Sebring and Berkley Prep.

Julian Perez, American Heritage, football: Perez’s fumble return for a touchdown stood up as the Patriots (4-1) escaped with a 6-0 victory over visiting Daytona Beach Mainland.

Jordy Groters, University School, boys’ swimming: Groters won the 100 butterfly and 200 IM and led the Suns’ winning 200-yard medley relay and 200-yard freestyle relay teams as the Suns defended its Swimming and Diving Invitational title.

The Coral Springs girls’ volleyball team shut down the Deerfield Beach Bucks in three consecutive sets 25-12, 25-7 and 25-22 on Monday afternoon.

The Colts were led by junior Julia Lewkowicz who chipped in 19 points, 14 kills and five digs. Senior Haley Toler added 14 points, two kills, 13 assists and four aces, followed by senior Kelly Locke with 14 points, 14 assists and two aces.

Coral Springs is 14-1 and 6-0 in district. It will take on the Douglas Eagles on Wednesday afternoon, followed by its district game against Taravella.

BOYS’ GOLF

The American Heritage boys’ golf team defeated Cardinal Gibbons 279-344 at the par-72 Fort Lauderdale Country Club South Course on Monday afternoon.

Jorge Garcia led the Patriots with a Broward County record-tying score of 64. Tommy Hurst held the original 64 when he was an American Heritage golfer in 2010. Garcia now has a scoring average of 68.6.

Strafaci Coll followed with a score of 71.

American Heritage will take on University School on Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Lago Mar Country Club in Plantation.
