Re the Sept. 15 story Ban on texting while driving to launch quietly. On Oct. 1, Florida will be the 41st state to have a law that bans texting while driving.
The law can be effective even with the violation as a secondary offense. Chances are, drivers who text at the wheel will be involved in a primary offense that brings their texting to a police officer’s attention. Young drivers we see texting through the flow of traffic on U.S. 1 are likely to run a red light, hit another car or slam into a tree.
Gov. Scott blocked funding to inform the public about the law. It’s up to the media and all of us to get the word out.
