Miami Lakes will provide funding for FCAT tutoring as part of its budget for the 2013-2014 year. But the tax rate will remain the same next year, after the Town Council approved the tax rate on Sept. 24.
The Town of Miami Lakes adopted a tax rate of $2.35 per $1,000 of taxable property. That means many longtime homeowners will pay 1.7 percent more due to rising assessed property values.
The council also voted to give $4,000 to FCAT tutoring for the upcoming school year. Many residents expressed concern that FCAT scores were falling in Miami Lakes. The money was taken from a $6,600 cut in medical expenses.
Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test scores fell at Miami Lakes schools last year, putting them at risk of losing their “A” grades.
Miami Lakes K-8 Center and Bob Graham Education Center were only several points away from the “A” cut off. If the schools’ grades were to drop, they would no longer receive Florida School Recognition Funding, which awards $100 per student if the school receives an “A” rating.
