Deerfield Beach cruises to victory over Coral Springs

Deerfield Beach didn’t handle the absence of one of its best players and some inclement weather very well early Saturday against Coral Springs.

But senior tailback Brandon Powell wasn’t fazed as the Bucks got back on track.

Powell, a University of Miami commitment, broke an 80-yard touchdown run in the third quarter that gave the Bucks a cushion and eventually a 26-6 district victory at home.

Powell finished with 200 yards rushing on 21 carries and scored three touchdowns to lead Deerfield Beach (4-0, 2-0 in District 11-8A).

The Bucks, who lost to eventual Class 8A state runner-up Cypress Bay in the regional quarterfinals last season, are aiming to make a deeper playoff run this year.

“We came out a little sloppy, but we made some adjustments and came out with a different attitude in the second half,” Deerfield Beach coach Allen Jackson said. “We have to keep taking care of little things like missed assignments and missed tackles. Down the line, people are going to keep coming at them, so they have to be ready.”

Deerfield Beach ran the ball well as the game progressed, but struggled in the first half without senior Aeron McNeal, who served a one-game suspension Saturday after picking up two personal fouls last week against Douglas.

The Bucks defense, however, didn’t let Deerfield lose control of the game.

Sophomore defensive back James Pierre recorded two interceptions, and Tyler Sayles and Jason Strowbridge led the pass rush that accounted for four sacks.

The Colts (1-3, 1-1) cut Deerfield Beach’s lead early in the fourth quarter when Jake Bofshever found Chad Boyd for an 18-yard touchdown on a drive aided by two personal-foul penalties on the Bucks.

Deerfield Beach squashed Coral Springs’ momentum on the ensuing drive when Powell scored on a 6-yard touchdown. Powell also had a 32-yard touchdown run.

Senior Michael Greene opened the game’s scoring with a 3-yard touchdown run early in the second quarter and finished with 59 yards on 10 carries.

“The offensive line started making different calls in the second half and the quarterback [Danarious Graham] started making better reads,” Jackson said. “We always want a shutout, but I was very pleased with the defense’s effort.”
