A memorial service for Roberto Alonso, the first vice mayor of Miami Lakes, is scheduled for 11 a.m. Friday at Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic Church, 15801 NW 67th Ave., Miami Lakes.
Alonso died Wednesday of pancreatic cancer at age 62.
“He was an incredible family man and truly exemplifies what a perfect father, husband and gentleman should be,” said Miami Lakes Mayor Ceasar Mestre. “He served as both ‘the rock’ to his family, and to this community, always striving to go above and beyond.”
Alonso served on the town’s council from 2000 to 2008. He focused on improving the town’s public safety and on making neighborhood, roads and parks safer, the mayor said.
“He was best known for championing the vision, creation and development of Royal Oaks Park and Community Center, and instrumental in convincing the state to donate the land for a new fire station on the west side of town,” Mestre said.
