Strong August for South Florida hotels

August brought big year-over-year boosts in business for South Florida hotels.

According to data released recently by Smith Travel Research, hotels throughout the region posted gains in occupancy, rates and per-room revenue compared to August of 2012.

In Miami-Dade, hotels were 75.5 percent full, an increase of 3.8 percentage points. Average daily rates jumped 10.6 percent to $139.29, and revenue per available room shot up nearly 15 percent to $105.13.

Broward hotels posted occupancy rates of nearly 70 percent, up 5.7 percentage points from the previous year. Rates jumped 5.4 percent to $94.16, and per-room revenue increased 11.4 percent to $65.70.

The Florida Keys showed the greatest gains, with occupancy at 78.3 percent — an increase of nearly 15 percentage points. Average rates surged 15.1 percent to nearly $205, and revenue per available room jumped more than 32 percent to $160.31.
