Panthers’ Jake Medlock recovering

Coach Ron Turner said if redshirt quarterback Jake Medlock is healthy, he’ll start against Southern Mississippi on Oct. 5. Medlock, who missed Saturday’s loss at Louisville with a concussion sustained a week earlier, practiced some Wednesday and is expected to be recovered fully by Sunday.

• Turner said that although the running game has been unproductive this season — ranking 123rd out of 123 in the FBS — FIU wouldn’t start throwing the ball around more.

“No, because that hasn’t been much better than the running game,” Turner said. “At least we run the ball, we have a chance to get back to the line of scrimmage. We’re throwing it, he’s running backwards, which was the case last week.

“We’ve got to run our offense and start clicking. We had some opportunities in every game to make some plays. You make one or two of those plays, it’s shocking how quickly you can gain some confidence.”
