Re Leonard Pitts, Jr.’s Sept. 18 Other Views column, Insanity over guns claims new victims: America isn’t crazy. It’s the people committing these acts of violence who are crazy. All of the culprits of these acts, from the shooting of Gabby Giffords to the Navy Yard shooter, have been mentally ill.
The issue should be how we treat the mentally ill, not why Americans worship guns.
There was a time when people like these could have been taken off the street and committed for evaluation and treatment, but the ACLU argued that their constitutional rights were being violated. Liberals would rather violate the Second Amendment rights of a majority of responsible gun owners.
It doesn’t take a gun to commit mass murder; just look at the likes of Ted Bundy. The common element in all of these violent acts is the mental state of the perpetrators.
