Carol Stadnik Dodgen was one of the first to bring karaoke to Miami Springs beginning about 20 years ago. She started at Tom’s NFL and moderated the mostly amateur singing craze there for three years before moving to the Miami Springs Country Club for another six years.
When Dodgen’s father — the late John Stadnik, owner of Miami Springs Pharmacy — became ill, she took over the longtime drugstore and resurrected the soda fountain and luncheonette. It was a longtime dream of pioneer Stadnik, but he passed away before it came to fruition.
On Friday evening, Sept. 13, Dodgen initiated karaoke night while serving food, drinks and desserts. Music and words to 6,000 tunes were provided by former city manager and DJ Jim Borgmann, who also isn’t too shabby of a singer.
“We started as a soda fountain and that’s going good, so we evolved into having a karaoke night,” said Dodgen. “If people like it, karaoke will continue.”
