American shuts out Goleman in district opener

Special to The Miami Herald

After getting off to an unexpected 0-2 start, American was in no mood to fool around with underdog Goleman at Milander Stadium. And it didn’t as the Patriots scored four first-half touchdowns in the District 16-7A opener for both teams.

The Patriots offense was led by quarterback Ed Crouch, who enjoyed a big night by completing 9 of 18 passes for 149 yards and four touchdowns. Goleman is 0-4.

Crouch did just about all of his damage in the first half as he fired touchdown passes of 15, 14 and 16 yards to Nate Davis, Anthony Gordon and Yuri Davis, respectively. Kama Barnes opened the scoring with a 75-yard touchdown run just four minutes into the game.

Crouch completed a 37-yard scoring strike to Davis three minutes into the second half, which prompted a running clock the rest of the way.

“We definitely needed to start getting some things staightened out after the start to the season we had,” said American coach Corey Bell. “Tonight we did a good job of coming out and setting the tone early to take control of the game. Now we need to just move forward from here.”
