McIntosh, defense power Cardinal Gibbons to victory over Boyd Anderson

Special to the Miami Herald

Cardinal Gibbons recorded its third shutout in four games, beating host Boyd Anderson 30-0 Friday night.

In improving to 4-0 on the season, Gibbons’ defense actually outscored the BA offense as senior linebacker Luke Niles returned an interception 20 yards for the Chiefs’ first score of the night.

Gibbons also got a safety when the BA punter couldn’t handle a low snap in his own end zone.

Gibbons’ high-powered offense scored its fewest points of the season but still got some good performances, including 151 yards on just eight carries by running back Deon McIntosh. The speedy sophomore broke off runs of 51 and 73 yards but was not able to score on either play.

Chiefs quarterback Peyton Bender, a Washington State recruit, completed 16 of 24 passes for 180 yards and three touchdowns. He was intercepted once and sacked twice.

Bender, who fumbled four times but recovered each one, completed two TD passes to George Rushing and one to Christian Blake to put away BA (0-4).
