Miami’s Top 5: What you should know Friday


1. Miami-Dade commissioners are rolling the dice on getting federal funding to avert firefighter layoffs as they approved a budget early Friday for 2013-14.

2. As South Florida analyzes new job figures released Friday, poverty remains at elevated levels throughout the region. Poverty levels in 2012 remained roughly where they were in 2011 and 2010, according to the latest Census survey: about 21 percent in Miami-Dade and 15 percent in Broward.

3. It’s Friday Night Lights in South Florida, with key matchups: Coral Gables vs. Columbus, Miramar vs. St. Thomas Aquinas, Northwestern vs. Carol City. In a key Thursday night matchup, Booker T. Washington rolled over Jackson.

4.As part of International Park(ing) Day, urban activists say they will transform parking spaces in downtown Miami into mini public parks to emphasize the need for more open space. The event being held Friday runs from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. in front of the Miami-Dade College’s Wolfson campus.

5. We’re getting a weather break: The forecast for rain dips to 20 percent on Friday, with a low of 73 expected at night.
