Miami Hurricanes’ Shane McDermott out vs. Savannah State

McDermott is out

Starting center Shane McDermott was ruled out for Saturday night’s game against Savannah State with a lower-extremity injury, according to the injury report released Thursday.

McDermott, who has started 14 consecutive games at center for UM, is backed up by 6-5, 319-pound senior Jared Wheeler. Wheeler has played in 25 games in his career but has never started.

• Quarterback Stephen Morris was one of 22 student-athletes selected to the 2013 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team, announced Tuesday by Allstate and the American Football Coaches Association.

The honor is in recognition of the “good works” of the select players from across the country.

Morris was one of only 11 players from the Football Bowl Subdivision to be honored with the award.

Morris’ extensive volunteering includes coaching a T-ball team in Overtown, and working at the Miami Rescue Mission and the Ronald McDonald House.
