Dr. F.G. Walton Smith, oceanographer and founder of the Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science, repeatedly pointed out that Miami Beach and many other Florida cities are built on a barrier island.
Barrier islands are made of sand, not permanent and cannot be made so. Water, when moving, will carry sand and, when slowed down, will drop that sand. This later event happens when a jetty or pilings are built in the water. City planners and developers should remember this simple lesson when they stare horrified at the encroaching ocean and the sandless beaches.
