Yoani Sanchez, in her Sept. 7 Other Views column, Cuba’s olive green aristocracy, has elegantly driven the fatal stake through the vampire heart of the Cuban Revolution. Since it began in 1959, the main justification offered by the Castro brothers for the utter devastation that the revolution has wreaked on Cuba has been class warfare — the notion that the revolution was going to take from the rich and give to the poor.
Sanchez’s column shows that no such transfer of wealth happened. Instead of benefiting ordinary people, the revolution created a new oligarchy, far more arrogant, cruel and insensitive than the old one was alleged to be. They are vulgar, ill-educated and ill-bred. One only hopes that Sanchez’s stake will have its desired effect and kill the revolutionary monster forever.
