Cross-country meet full of drama as teams compete in Fort Lauderdale City Championships

flyon@MiamiHerald.com

Bragging rights will be on the line as 10 Fort Lauderdale-based, cross-country teams vie for the Fort Lauderdale City Championships at Mills Pond Park on Thursday.

St. Thomas Aquinas is the prohibitive favorite to sweep the boys’ and girls’ championships, while Pine Crest and Westminster Academy figures to battle for the runner-up spots on both sides.

The biggest drama, however, surrounds the girls’ race, in which Pine Crest’s Julia Montgomery, the reigning Class 2A state champion, faces St. Thomas Aquinas’ Alexa Cruz, a state runner-up in 4A last season.

What could come down to a stride-for-stride finish should help settle the debate — at least until Montgomery and Cruz meet again — over which sophomore star runner reigns as the best in Broward.

Montgomery owns a 17:52 personal-best while Cruz, who led the Raiders to its first state title, ran 18:09 last season.
