A private-public partnership led by Florida International University has received an $11.4 million grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation — money that will be used to build a pedestrian bridge across Southwest Eighth Street, among other improvements.
To obtain the grant, FIU partnered with the Miami-Dade Transportation Authority, the Miami-Dade Expressway Authority, IBM, and others. The money will also pay for street improvements at FIU and in the neighboring city of Sweetwater, which was also part of the grant partnership team.
Part of the grant will pay for a “Smart Parking Software System” designed to make it easier to locate parking spaces at FIU. The system will alert smartphone users to available parking spaces in a new FIU garage.
