An 81-year-old man shot a school crossing guard with a BB rifle, barricaded himself in his home, shot at SWAT officers, and later killed himself, police said.
The incident began about 3 p.m. Tuesday near 698 E. 32nd St. in Hialeah when Everardo Hermenegildo Buznego shot a 71-year-old school crossing guard in the buttocks.
Buznego then locked himself in his home, refusing to answer the door to investigating officers.
After hours of unsuccessful negotiations, the Hialeah Police Department dispatched a SWAT team to the house.
Buznego fired several gunshots at SWAT members as soon as they broke through the front door, police said.
Officers retreated from the home, regrouped and entered again. That’s when they found Buznego dead with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
"It is unknown at this time what, if anything, caused Mr. Buznego’s irrational behavior," Carl Zogby, of the Hialeah Police Department said in a statement. "Mr. Buznego lived alone and had a history of ongoing quarrels with neighbors."
