Man drowns in lake behind Northwest Miami-Dade home

A 24-year-old man drowned after going for a swim in a lake behind his home Sunday evening in Northwest Miami-Dade.

Family members said Jeremy Sawyer went in the lake behind their home at 1420 NW 143rd St. but was unable to stay afloat.

Sawyer was submerged for about 10 to 15 minutes before Miami-Dade Fire Rescue workers were able to pull him out.

The delay was partially caused by rescue workers waiting for trained scuba divers to arrive, said fire rescue spokesman Arnold Piedrahita.

His family members and a neighbor said they jumped in after him to try and save him. He was taken to Jackson Health North in critical condition and later died.
