Belen Jesuit wins Ferguson Invitational

Belen Jesuit continued its winning ways in the first major meet of the high school season, winning the Ferguson Invitational at Larry and Penny Thompson Park.

But Sunset showed it will be a contender this season.

Junior Nick Diaz captured the individual championship edging Coral Reef’s Kurt Convey. Diaz ran a time of 16:12.96 ahead of Convey’s 16:26.35. Fabian Tomas led Belen finishing third in 16:31.34.

“We’ve been working on gear changing in practice so many times and now it’s starting to pay off,” Diaz said.

Ferguson started its season strong with a team championship 15 points ahead of Lourdes Academy. The Falcons were led by individual champion Katrina Santiago’s time of 19:37.23. Ferguson placed three runners in the top five.
