Germany: Munich Oktoberfest opens Sept. 21

We know better, but we’re always surprised in October to find that Oktoberfest is almost over. Considered the biggest beer fest in the world, last year’s extravaganza drew just under 6.5 million visitors who drank more than 14.5 million pints of beer. And while some of the beer tents can accommodate 10,000 people, organizers warn visitors to come early because some fill to capacity before noon. The party starts on Sept. 21 and runs through Oct. 6

    The Museum of Fine Arts in Boston says it has acquired a posthumous portrait of John F. Kennedy by American artist Jamie Wyeth. The Kennedy family requested the portrait following the president’s 1963 assassination. The painting is part of an exhibit on Jamie Wyeth and will be on display opening Wednesday. It will be on display through Dec. 28 before going on a nationwide tour.

    Thousands of revelers crammed into the main square and adjacent narrow streets of northern Pamplona on Sunday for the start of Spain’s famed San Fermin running of the bulls festival – a potent mix of adrenaline and alcohol-fueled celebrations that span over a week.
