Though the political signs and campaign speeches have already filled Miami Beach, the election season officially kicked off Friday evening when the qualifying period ended.
In all 14 candidates are vying for four seats, including the mayors. Heres a list of the candidates:
*Mayor: Entertainer Steve Berke faces current Commissioner Michael Góngora and self-made millionaire businessman Philip Levine. along with perennial candidate Raphael Herman. The seat is wide open this year because the current mayor is term-limited. Already, the candidates have raised more $700,000 in campaign contributions and personal loans.
*Group I: Realtor S herry Kaplan Roberts faces Micky Steinberg, a real estate agent and wife of former state Rep. Richard Steinberg, and retiree Elsa Urquiza. Also running: Mohammed Islam. The seat is currently held by Commissioner Jerry Libbin, who is term-limited. He recently dropped out of the mayors race.
* Group III: Current Mayor Matti Herrera Bower is up against banker Joy Malakoff and community activist Roger Abramson. The seat is currently held by Góngora, whos running for mayor.
Voters go to the polls Nov. 5.
