Among FIU’s injured players, junior defensive end Giovani Francois returned to practice 12 days after undergoing arthroscopic knee surgery. Still out, however, were strong safety Demarkus Perkins, outside linebacker Davison Colimon and redshirt sophomore Shane Coleman. Coleman was the only one of the three without a cast or a walking boot and he’s the one Turner said had the best chance of playing Friday.

“They made big strides the last 24 hours,” FIU coach Ron Turner said. “If they can make the same gains in the next 24 hours, they have a chance.”

• Walk-on freshman Aaron Montgomery, a wide receiver from Jupiter Community High, has joined the team.
