A two-car accident on Interstate 95 in Miami-Dade left two people in critical condition late Sunday and closed all southbound lanes on the expressway, as of 12:30 a.m. Monday.
Six people were injured in the two-car crash at the Northwest 103rd Street exit, the Florida Highway Patrol said.
As of early Monday, the expressway remained closed and thousands of Labor Day Weekend motorists had to be rerouted off the highway as debris from the accident covered all lanes of the expressway.
The accident occurred around 9:50 p.m. when a southbound driver lost control, hit the guardrail, then the wall and finally struck another vehicle, FHP said.
Two of the four passengers from the first car were ejected to the roadway. They were transported to the Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital in critical condition. The other two passengers were transported to the trauma center in stable condition and were later released.
Officials said the second vehicle sustained damage and those passengers suffered minor injuries.
