Riddick (R): Vin Diesel reprises his role as the sci-fi anti-hero Riddick, this time stranded on a planet of ferocious alien predators.
Passion (R): Director Brian De Palma ( Dressed to Kill, Body Double) returns to the psycho-sexual thriller genre with this story of the mounting rivalry between an advertising executive (Rachel McAdams) and her ambitious protege (Noomi Rapace). Business can be murder.
Cold Justice (10 p.m. Tuesday, TNT): From Law & Order producer Dick Wolf, an unusual reality show in which former cops and prosecutors visit small towns around America to take a fresh look at murder cases that have lingered, unsolved, for years.
It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia (10 p.m. Wednesday, FXX): America’s most sociopathic sitcom returns for a ninth season — back in 2005, you probably couldn’t have found anybody in Hollywood who would have bet on a second — on a brand-new cable network, FXX.
The League (10:30 p.m. Wednesday, FXX): Another veteran sitcom that’s changed cable networks. The League, starting its fifth season, is about six old friends whose main occupation is viciously humiliating one another in a fantasy football league. You don’t need to know anything about it to enjoy it, but complete lack of human empathy comes in handy.
Real Fear 2: The Truth Behind (More) Movies (9 p.m. Friday, Chiller): A second installment of an occasional documentary series that looks at the (supposed) real-life events that offered the (supposed) inspiration for horror movies like The Blair Witch Project and A Nightmare on Elm Street. Whatever their accuracy, the stories are lots of fun to watch if you’re an axe-in-the-head kind of guy, gal or space alien.
