Cardinal Gibbons coach has record night as Chiefs rout Western

Special To The Miami Herald

Chiefs coach Mike Morrill couldn’t have asked for a better opening night — for his team or himself.

The host Chiefs got their season off to a highly impressive start with a victory against Western, and Morrill reached a personal milestone with the most varsity football coaching wins in Cardinal Gibbons history. His overall record from 1999 to the present is 96-54.

Morrill surpasses Don Marino, who from 1985-1998 compiled an overall mark of 95-57.

“I’ve been surrounded by a lot of great young men and a lot of great coaches in my career here,” Morrill told his team. “Let’s hope you guys are the best ever.”

Quarterback Peyton Bender lived up to Morrill’s wish on this opening night at Dr. Bud Tight Field with an incredible performance as he completed 24 of 30 passes for 346 yards and four touchdowns.
