Southwest ran over Coral Park in a rout over the Rams in the season opener at Tropical Park on Thursday night.
Four Eagles totaled five rushing touchdowns and 174 yards on the ground in the win as the Rams struggled to find an answer to the Southwest running game.
Sophomore James Barnes, normally a wide receiver, entered the game in the third quarter at running back for Southwest (1-0) and finished with a game-high 85 yards rushing on five carries with two touchdowns, both coming in the third quarter.
"The running game is what got us going. They did a great job," said Eagles coach Tim Neal. "A game like this sets the tone and the pace for the rest of the season."
The Rams (0-1) struggled to muster any momentum on offense, converting just three first downs for the entire game and less than 100 yards of total offense. Southwest’s defense and special teams took advantage of Coral Park’s five turnovers, converting two of them into first-half touchdowns that helped the Eagles earn a 21-point lead at halftime.
