Police will be on the prowl through the holiday weekend, looking for drunken drivers in South Florida.

Starting at 7 p.m. Friday through 1 a.m. Saturday, Miami officers will be posted at a DUI checkpoint at West Flagler Street 25th Avenue. Beyond that, officers will conduct “DUI Saturation Patrols” through the Labor Day weekend.

Police say they also will be on the lookout for aggressive and unbuckled drivers.

In Hollywood, police will set up a command post at 1200 N. Federal Hwy. Also, 15 city officers, along with others from the Broward Sheriff’s Office, will focus on DUI patrol.

The effort is part of an overall focus on areas prone to crashes such as Young Circle, Sheridan at A1A and Hollywood Boulevard at 441.

“We want to send the message that traffic safety is everyone’s responsibility. We’re stepping up enforcement and will be working harder to educate the public,” Hollywood Police Chief Frank Fernandez said in a statement. “We need motorists to mindful of the devastating consequences of aggressive driving and driving under the influence every time they get behind the wheel.”
