Fort Lauderdale Pine Crest’s Steven Chervony started his 2013 golf season impressively by winning the individual championship of the Westminster Christian Invitational at the Biltmore Golf Course on Tuesday morning.
Chervony edged Miami Columbus’ Julio Betancourt by one stroke, shooting a 1-under-par 70 to win the event.
Betancourt’s second-place 71, however, led a strong effort by Columbus, which secured the team championship with a team score of 298. Pine Crest finished third as a team with 314 behind runner-up Boca Raton St. Andrews’ 309.
Miami Palmetto’s David Castano finished tied for third at 74 followed by a trio of Columbus golfers — Juan Yumar (75), Rafa Martinez (76) and Eddie Martinez (76).

In its first regular season tournament match as reigning state champions, American Heritage’s boys’ golf team cruised to an 11-stroke victory over North Palm Beach Benjamin on Tuesday shooting 290 as a team to win the American Heritage Invitational at Lago Mar Country Club in Plantation.
Benjamin’s Jalen Ledger set a meet record by shooting a 66 to win the individual championship. American Heritage was led by Matt Mourin, who shot a 70 to finish second. The Patriots were without two of their top players, Jorge Garcia and Kristian Caparros, who were competing in an AJGA tournament in Jacksonville.

Palmetto defeated Gulliver in its first game of the season by a score of 25-20, 19-25, 17-25, 25-23, 15-11.
The Panthers rallied after being down 2-1 to take a tight fourth set, and then seal the victory with a 15-11 final game.
Palmetto (1-0) was led by Taylor David, who had 17 kills and two blocks and Addie Arill had a team-high 25 assists and six digs to go along with her four aces.
Palmetto travels to Killian on Thursday to face off against its district rival. In Killian’s first game of the season, the Cougars defeated district foe Southridge 25-15, 25-10, 25-3.
• Archbishop McCarthy d. American Heritage 25-14, 25-5, 25-6: The Mavericks won their season opener against the Patriots in straight sets.
Brooke Wilder led Archbishop McCarthy (1-0) with 15 kills in addition to her seven points, two aces and 14 digs. Sarah Wilensky recorded a team-high 23 assists to go along with 13 points and six aces.
For American Heritage (0-1), Laura Perez accumulated four kills, three digs and three blocks. Lu Grinspan registered two kills, two digs and three blocks while Katie Johnson added eight assists and three digs.
