Muschamp: Matt Jones expected to play for Gators against Miami

Miami Herald Writer

Coach Will Muschamp said sophomore tailback Matt Jones “should certainly” return for No. 10 UF’s in-state showdown with Miami on Sept. 7.

Jones, sidelined while recovering from a viral infection, will miss Saturday’s opener against Toledo, but Muschamp said UF’s starting tailback is running, cutting and lifting weights again.

Jones is still not cleared to practice in pads, but when asked how many practices Jones might need to be ready for UM, offensive coordinator Brent Pease said, “Zero.”

Although cornerback Loucheiz Purifoy’s offensive role has diminished thanks to the emergence of freshmen receivers Demarcus Robinson and Ahmad Fulwood, Pease said the dynamic junior would receive around four offensive touches per game.

“There’s a lot of places you can put him to run the ball,” Pease said. “He’s got the potential that defenses have got to be accountable to him.”
