Dream come true? You could say that. Shuh Jiuan Ng’s packing her bags and heading to NYC next month for Mercedes Benz Fashion Week.
The Malaysian-born Palm Beach resident is a finalist in the Made for Peroni Young Designer Awards, which gives budding talent the opportunity to become the next big thing. The former computer engineer and Zang Toi alum will discuss her sketches with an elite panel of judges; if Ng wins, she’ll net $40,000 to launch her collection.
As for her own tailored meets chic style, “less is more,” says Ng, who shops for most of her fabric in Miami’s Fashion District. “I am a T-shirt and skinny jeans kind of person. I throw in some statement jewelry to make it interesting.”
How does South Florida fashion compare to the rest of the U.S.? “We’re more laidback with a strong Latin American influence,” she says. “Vibrant colors have become a staple.”
For inspiration, the 31-year-old looks through her old travel photos. “I take snapshots of things that appeal to me, especially interesting architecture,” Ng explains. “I like to incorporate soft and hard elements in my designs.”
Gabrielle Anwar made Slava’s Snow Show a family affair Saturday. The Burn Notice warrior and beau of three years Shareef Malnik took in the now departed Russian fantasy play at the Adrienne Arsht Center with her kids, Willow (dad is A River Runs Through It star Craig Sheffer), and Hugo and Paisley (with Anwar’s ex husband, actor John Verea).
