Letter writer Candie Suarez was offended by a letter supporting SNAP (Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program) benefits, because other people’s children aren’t her responsibility.
It is admirable that Suarez and her husband are so responsibly providing for their family, but not all parents can do that. Some are unable to find work, or work that pays enough to support a family; some have disabling injuries or illness; some have made unwise decisions about money or relationships — and yes, there are some who simply don’t accept their responsibilities.
Their children are “our” children, too. If we want them to learn and grow up to be healthy, productive members of society, they need to be well-nourished. It does take a village to nurture our future, and it saddens me that for some people the village apparently stops at their own front door.
