MOCA confirms choice of interim director

The Museum of Contemporary Art in North Miami announced Thursday that its new curator, Alex Gartenfeld, will fill the role of interim director and chief curator while a search continues for a permanent director.

Though the official word didn’t come until Thursday, several people associated with the museum said Gartenfeld would serve as interim director immediately after former director and chief curator Bonnie Clearwater announced she was leaving for the Museum of Art | Fort Lauderdale last month.

The museum and city of North Miami are conducting a “comprehensive international search” for a permanent director, according to a press release.

Gartenfeld, 26, a rising curator and art critic from New York, was hired earlier this year for a new position at the North Miami museum.

His first exhibition at MOCA, Love of Technology, opens Sept. 27.
