Grayson a beloved pediatrician

With the passing of Dr. Robert Grayson, (obituary, Aug. 18), an extraordinary era has surely passed. Dr. Grayson practiced pediatrics for 37 years and was a recognized leader in pediatric medicine. The impact that he made locally is what will remain for years to come.

After we delivered our first child in 1964, Dr. Grayson came to our garden apartment for the two-week visit rather than the standard well-baby visit at his North Beach office. He said he preferred to see the infant in her own environment, I’m sure to check that the home was safely set up for childcare. Robert Grayson and his wife, Shirl, were so much a part of South Florida child-rearing for two generations that they lived “family values” before the term was a political whip. We shall miss them both.

  • Lessons from China

Kudos to my congresswoman, U.S. Rep Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, and Sen. Marco Rubio for sending their staffers to China. This should help open their eyes (and the eyes of their staffers) to what a real and effective policy toward Cuba should look like.

  • Corruption at corrections

Randall Jordan-Amparo’s death in the hands of a system of a callous, corrupt crew in Florida’s corrections system is outrageous and unacceptable. I thank the Miami Herald for illuminating this travesty of justice.

  • FIU expansion has benefits

Through the years, I have enjoyed the Youth Fair with my family. I have also been delighted at how much Florida International University has grown and flourished.
