Reaction to verdict isn’t racist

While many of us were disgusted by the jurors’ verdict of not guilty in the George Zimmerman trial , it didn’t imply that he was innocent. He wasn’t. However, I take exception to Alecia McGregor’s reflections in the Aug. 18 Other Views article, Will Trayvon become a new racial slur? and how she implies that this sad case involved racism and discrimination. It did not.

There were many indications that Zimmerman had never been racist or practiced discrimination. The unfortunate personal experience of her brother upon hearing white patrons of the restaurant where he was working cheering the verdict is no less racist than the cheers of black college students, which were seen in video clips, upon hearing the not-guilty verdict in the infamous O.J. Simpson trial.
