I laughed so much reading Max Holscher’s Aug. 17 Other Views article, An American compliment through a German lens. I’m guilty of complimenting people on something they are wearing, their kindness, how efficient they are in their work or I’m hugging them before I’m aware of it. So far no one has been insulted by this. I tell them they need to be rewarded for their good work or kindness to others.
We must seem so strange to people like Holscher, but our culture is made up of so many different cultures where our words or actions do not seem unusual. I wouldn’t want to be any other way and will continue to be myself, complimenting people and hugging them.
