A backwards runner who was ticketed by Miami Beach has had his case dismissed, according to the man and his lawyer.
Alex Mesa, 44, is known for running backwards through the streets of South Beach while wearing a neon yellow vest and matching spandex shorts, accessorized with yellow and orange wrist bands.
He was slapped with a $77.50 ticket in April. The reason, he said, was for his unique running style.
Police said the problem was not how Mesa was running, but where: in the street, obstructing traffic, potentially affecting safety.
The case was dismissed Monday, Mesa said, with the judge telling him to run in the bike lanes and keep out of the way of vehicles.
Mesa says he hopes the attention his case has gotten will spark interest in his sport.
“My dream is to try to get this recognized as a sport in the United States...I’m dying to see this as an Olympic event,” he said.
