LOS ANGELES -- SummerSlam Axxess at Nokia Plaza at L.A. Live on Saturday, Aug. 17 was highlighted by the much-anticipated roster reveal of the upcoming WWE 2K14 videogame.
Justin Roberts, Jim Ross, Jerry Lawler and Damien Sandow ran down the list of legends who will comprise the release’s single-player “30 years of WrestleMania” mode. Ross and the King serve as the commentary team for the historic battles in it. Howard Finkel also lent his voice for the superstar and diva introductions to give the game that authentic feel.
Names included The Rock, who graces the game’s cover, as well as the Ultimate Warrior, CM Punk, Sgt. Slaughter, Edge, Diesel, Undertaker, King Kong Bundy, Brock Lesnar, Andre the Giant, Alberto Del Rio, Shawn Michaels, Ricky Steamboat, Big John Studd, Steve Austin, Hulk Hogan, Hollywood Hogan, Randy Orton, Razor Ramon, Big Show, Triple H, John Bradshaw Layfield, Bret Hart, Mick Foley, The Miz, Batista, Yokozuna, John Cena, Randy Savage, Ric Flair and Goldberg. The mode will also have retro versions of Big Show, Jericho, Cena, Triple H, Kane, Undertaker, HBK, Lesnar and Rock to recapture some of WrestleMania’s biggest matches.
Sandow made sure to handcuff his personalized Money in the Bank briefcase to the ring post before entering the ring. This was a precaution in case Cody Rhodes tried to take it from him again. The “Intellectual Savior of the Masses” talked ill about Flair, which led to the “Nature Boy” appearing to confront the pompous superstar.
The moment and reveal, which was streamed online, was only part of the fun during the festivities at Axxess. The day also featured question-and-answer sessions with the likes of Kaitlyn and Paul Heyman. There were also VIP signings with John Cena, CM Punk and Triple H. Other WWE superstars and divas spent time signing autographs for fans. The “Total Divas” reality show cameras were around filming footage that may air in an upcoming episode.
Also some action in the ring spotlighting the great talent in NXT, WWE’s developmental territory. NXT women’s champion Paige got the win on her birthday against Emma. Talk show host legend Larry King and his family were seen earlier in the day taking in the event. The Miz and Cena met with Scooby-Doo to promote next year’s WWE Studios release. Fans took photos in front of the Mystery Machine. Mattel also had a booth providing some insight on what goes into creating WWE action figures and Brawlin’ Buddies.
The Make-A-Wish Foundation, Susan G Komen and National Guard were also represented, creating awareness for their organizations. They are some of the community partners of WWE.
Later in the evening, WWE 2K14 welcomed the media to attend a special WrestleMania panel at the Conga Room of L.A. Live. This was moderated by Ross to celebrate the single-player mode. The lively and relatively off-the-cuff discussion featured Daniel Bryan, Dolph Ziggler, Stone Cold Steve Austin, Rey Mysterio, Foley, Heyman and Flair.
During the panel, Flair revealed he placed one of his WWE Hall of Fame rings on his late son Reid’s finger before they closed the coffin. The company and Triple H replaced the ring with Reid’s name engraved on it. At one point Heyman walked over to Ross and tore up his papers to signify that any sort of format for the panel went out the window. One of the most entertaining panels you will ever see was live-streamed on Twitch.
