Beer of the Week: Cigar City’s Florida Cracker a good choice in summer’s heat

Beer: Florida Cracker

Style: Belgian-style white ale (witbier)

Alcohol: 5 percent by volume

Price: About $8 a six-pack at Total Wine & More

Story: Tampa’s Cigar City Brewing Co. has built a reputation as one of the top craft breweries in the country, thanks in part to fresh, flavorful beers like Florida Cracker. It’s a Belgian-style white ale, brewed in the traditional style with coriander and orange peel. (Like Blue Moon? You’ll love Florida Cracker.) It gets its name from early Sunshine State cowboys known as Quáqueros who herded cattle with whips called crackers. Unfiltered and hazy, Florida Cracker is relatively low in alcohol and highly refreshing — a perfect choice for the dog days of summer. And because it comes in a can, it can go places bottles aren’t welcome, like golf courses, boats and pools.

Pairing: Light on the palate, it’s good with mild fish like tilapia or flounder. The coriander spicing and citrus-peel brightness complement cilantro-based garnishes and sauces.
