The legend begins with a bet. On a trip to Portugal, Margaretha and Wolfgang Ley put down a certain sum of money on a horse. Its name was Escada, and it went on to not only win the race but make fashion history. So inspired were the Leys, they returned to their native Germany, used the payout to launch a company and, of course, named it after the thoroughbred that changed their lives. That was 35 years ago, when the house of Escada was born. And while its sense of style has surely evolved through the years—from its iconic 80s Dynasty moment to its more simplified modern identity now—classic glamour has remained at its core all along. In tribute to such rich history, Escada this fall introduces the 1978 Signature Bag, named after the year the company was founded. Trapeze-shaped with python embossing, it proudly carries the company’s logo at the front. And like the horse that started it all, it’s a winner. $1,775.
