Tony Bennett resigned as Florida’s education commissioner because he got caught doing favors for a charter-school friend in Indiana. I believe former Gov. Jeb Bush and his for-profit friends like Randy Best and Bennett will be the ruination of public education across the country if we don’t stop the charter school juggernaut.
Chipping away endlessly at foundational support for K-12 and public universities, creating “minority tracks” in Florida high schools and endlessly “teaching to test” do nothing to develop critical thinking skills.
Blaming public schools for educationsl failure is misplaced. The blame goes to all the politicians who got their fine public education and now want to deny those who want the same privilege.
It’s time to get politics out of our schools and prepare citizens for the challenges they face in a rapidly changing world.
