Miami-based fighters Cruz, Augustama win Saturday night

Not known for finishing opponents at a frequent pace, Jessy Cruz stepped up his punching power Saturday night.

Cruz, a Cutler Bay resident, scored three knockdowns en route to a technical knockout victory over New York’s Lamar Charlton in an undercard bout of a show at Casino Miami Jai-Alai Fronton.

Cruz (10-5-1, 4 KOs) floored Charlton (1-4-1) twice in the third round and once in the fourth. Cruz’s punch buildup forced Charlton’s cornermen to stop the bantamweight fight before the bell to answer the fifth round.

“You are looking at the new Jessy, you’re going to see more of this type of fighter,” Cruz said of his dominant performance.

Miami resident Azea Augustama won a unanimous decision over Pittsburgh’s Rayco Saunder in the card’s main event. Augustama (15-1) won the light-heavyweight bout 100-90 on two judges’ scorecards and 99-91 on the third.

In other bouts: Light heavyweight Ahmed Elbiali scored a TKO over Jerrod Caldwell at 1:38 of the third round; lightweight Adrian Perez won by unanimous decision over Jose Rivera; and heavyweight Chaen Chess won by majority decision over Carlos Reyes.
