Ever since Russia passed laws that criminalize being openly gay or even making statements supporting equality for gays, some Americans have suggested that the United States should boycott the Olympics in Russia.
The Russians have promised that they will not prosecute gay athletes or visitors.
Perhaps we should actually send as many people as possible, waving rainbow flags and showing unwavering support for equality and justice for all.
Extensive, worldwide television and Internet coverage can shed light on the discriminatory nature of Russia’s laws and put pressure on the Russians to revoke them.
Let’s allow our athletes to pursue their dreams of gold, and let’s also send a positive message, “To Russia with love.”
