Miami Beach officer involved in fatal Tasering put on administrative leave

The Miami Beach police officer who Tasered an 18-year-old graffiti artist who subsequently died has been placed on paid administrative leave, department sources told The Miami Herald on Thursday.

The officer, Jorge Mercado, allegedly fired a single Taser shot at Israel Hernandez-Llach, striking him once in the chest, according to police.

Hernandez-Llach collapsed and was rushed to Mt. Sinai Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 6:15 a.m. Wednesday.

The case is under investigation.
