The position battle at kicker and punter remained in full swing Wednesday. But every contender seemed to have issues. Redshirt freshman Sergio Sroka took the initial rep with the first team and made his first field goal but later had an attempt blocked. Sroka seemed to be the favorite for the job. At punter, redshirt freshman Chris Ayers struggled during a directional punting drill. His kicks were slightly off target and didn’t have much hang time. True freshmen Karson Dietrich and Austin Taylor both competed with Ayers, and the two have a realistic shot of earning the job.
• The offensive play of the day came shortly after a pick-six by linebacker Derrick Jones Jr. Quarterback Jake Medlock launched a deep ball down the middle that hit wide receiver T.J. Lowder in stride, as Lowder managed to work his way behind the secondary. Medlock made up for his interception, and Lowder redeemed himself from a dropped ball earlier in the drill.
