Universal Orlando to hold Harry Potter celebration

Miami Herald Staff

Building on the popularity of the Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Islands of Adventure, Universal Orlando will host a three-day celebration of the boy wizard in January, an event that appears to be similar to Disney World’s Star Wars Weekends.

“A Celebration of Harry Potter,” to be held Jan. 24-26, will include a film tribute, Q&A sessions with Harry Potter “talent” and filmmakers, and a wand masterclass where attendees can learn the art of “duelling.” And of course attendees will spend time on the rides, shops and butterbeer stand in the Wizarding World area.

A new Harry Potter ride and other attractions are under construction at Islands’ sister park, Universal Studios, but are not expected to open until later in 2014.

Most of the weekends’ events will be open to all park guests, but people who buy a vacation package will have access to a private reception and reserved seating at certain events. The packages, which include hotel rooms for three nights and park passes for three days, start at $675 for Universal’s on-site hotels and $395 for off-site hotels. Packages go on sale Aug. 22.
