GAINESVILLE -- Steve Shaw, the Southeastern Conference’s head of officials, met with players and coaches on Monday to discuss the league’s new targeting rule.
UF coach Will Muschamp noted he spoke with his team on the first day of camp and “walked them through the true definition of targeting and the true definition of a defenseless player.” Muschamp admitted some frustrations in the vagueness of the rules but acknowledged that “player safety is first.”
Redshirt junior Cody Riggs (Fort Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas) has essentially grabbed one of Florida’s two starting safety spots. The Gators have spent the offseason searching for replacements for NFL rookies Matt Elam and Josh Evans, and Riggs “has distanced himself” from the pack.
“He’s done a good job,” Muschamp said. “Past that, we’ve got to get better.”
