Springview Elementary School will begin the upcoming school year with a new principal. As children are enjoying the last few weeks of their summer vacation, Springview Elementary is busy preparing for the new school year, which will be led by its new principal, Catalina Flor.
“I am very pleased and excited about my assignment as principal of Springview Elementary,” Flor said. “I am looking forward to working with the students and teachers, and serving the Miami Springs community.”
Flor has been an educator for many years. She began her career as an elementary school teacher, and quickly joined the administrative ranks. She has worked at numerous schools throughout the district. Although Flor is new to Springview, the role of principal is not new for her.
Flor comes to Springview from Phillis Wheatley Elementary in Overtown. Flor served as their principal for four years. During her time at Phillis Wheatley Elementary, her focus was on increasing student achievement. Under her leadership, the school’s letter designation changed from an “F” to an “A.”
Back in June, just a few weeks after school was dismissed for summer recess, Springview parents and students received a farewell message from then-principal Mayte Dovale.
“It has been an honor to have been the Principal of Springview Elementary for the past six years. I leave Springview with a sense of pride and accomplishment,” Dovale told parents. “I leave a school community that has helped me grow beyond my expectations. I hope that you continue to come together as a community and focus on the needs of our children and our school.
“I am honored to have been in the company of many great leaders here at Springview and hope that I was able to help the community grow and thrive a little better through my efforts. Much will be expected of the next principal of Springview Elementary, but in order for her to succeed, your commitment is necessary. I welcome Ms. Flor and am confident that she will fill the position with her own charisma and knowledge adding to the tradition of success that has been built at Springview Elementary over the years.”
When asked about any possible future changes at Springview, Flor mentioned that she doesn’t plan to make any major changes. “There are effective systems in place,” Flor said.
Her focus will continue to be on student achievement and student safety. She hopes to maintain the great relationship that currently exists between the school, parents and the community.
“We have an exciting school year ahead of us, filled with learning and fun. We welcome Ms. Flor to Springview Elementary with open arms,” said PTA president Natalia Fajardo. Fajardo has been part of Springview’s PTA for the past five years.
“Springview is known for its excellent communication and relationship between the administration, the staff, the parents, and the community,” Fajardo said. “I’m sure Springview will continue to flourish under Ms. Flor’s leadership.”
As many look back on Dovale’s tenure at Springview Elementary they will remember Dovale ended many of her assemblies by telling the students to keep reaching for the moon so that they may fall among the stars.
As Springview Elementary and the Miami Springs community wish Dovale nothing but success in her new ventures, we look ahead to a bright future.
With her impressive track record and contagious charisma, Catalina Flor, is a star in her own right, and she has most definitely landed among many stars at Springview Elementary School.
