Daniel Chang and Patricia Born’s Aug. 1 article about estimated health-insurance rates of Florida’s federally run insurance exchange to start Jan 1 reminds us that the Legislature and Gov. Rick Scott just stripped the Florida Office of Insurance Regulation’s power to negotiate rates with insurers offering health plans on the exchanges until 2016.
This is a diabolical tactic on so many levels. For starters, it sacrifices the pocketbooks of Florida consumers who could benefit from negotiated lower rates, which has occurred in other states. And, it is no coincidence that 2016 was selected. Republicans hope they can bray throughout the presidential campaign that the exchanges increased premiums in Florida. Will voters ever wake up in this state and realize how much political expediency trumps good government?
