•  The Miami Beach Rowing Club will conduct learn-to-row programs the weekends of Aug. 17 and Aug. 24 at the club, 6500 Indian Creek Dr., Miami Beach. Fee is $195 per session. Call 305-861-8876.

•  Help promote high school fishing at the fifth annual Spartan Fishing Tournament, a multi-species inshore and offshore contest Aug. 24 at La Siesta Resort & Marina in Islamorada. Visit www.paceanglersclub.com.

•  REEF will host a lionfish derby Sept. 14 at John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park in Key Largo. A cash purse of $3,500 will be awarded. Entry fee is $120 for a team of up to four. A mandatory team meeting will be held Sept. 13 at 6:30 p.m. Call 305-852-0030.

•  Catch and release bonefish for fun and prizes at the Marathon International Bonefish Tournament on Sept. 19-22. Anglers may fish from boats or shore. Entry fee is $225 for adult anglers; $125 for juniors. For more information, call Barbara Hewlett at 305-304-8682.

    New SpoolTek lure catches monster snook in dark of night

    There’s an oft-repeated bromide that nothing good happens after 2 a.m., but that’s not necessarily true when it comes to snook fishing. Snook angler extraordinaire/fishing tackle maker Dave Justice insisted that that’s when he, his son Dillon, 18, employee Greg Shaughnessy and I should test his latest innovation, the SpoolTek, for catching huge linesiders in Jupiter Inlet.

    South Florida fishing report: Aug. 20, 2014

    Captain Jimbo Thomas from the charter boat Thomas Flyer out of Miamarina at Bayside reported that large schoolie dolphins have been pretty thick along a giant weedline that has been located between 20 and 25 miles offshore of Miami.
